How to File Taxes on TradeDay Payouts

By TraderTaxHQ · Sources reviewed October 16, 2026 · U.S. individual taxpayer guidance

    Quick answer

Review your TradeDay agreement and reconcile payouts to your tax forms. Under a typical independent-contractor business arrangement, payouts generally belong on Schedule C and may incur self-employment tax. Trading futures in a funded account does not automatically make the payout a Section 1256 gain.

    What TradeDay says about payouts

TradeDay’s published guidance describes funded traders as independent contractors and distinguishes actual withdrawals from profits remaining in the funded account. Use withdrawal records to reconcile your income and review your specific agreement before choosing a reporting treatment.

Firm help pages can change and may describe earlier tax years. Confirm current form-delivery rules with the firm. Information-return thresholds do not make otherwise taxable income exempt.

    Records to collect before filing

    • Actual withdrawal history and payment dates
    • Funded-account agreement and account type
    • Evaluation and recurring fee receipts
    • 1099-NEC and records from payment processors

    Your filing checklist

    1. 1. Gather the agreement and every payout

Download your trader agreement, payout history, tax forms and fee receipts. Include income from every firm, including firms that send no U.S. form.

    2. 2. Reconcile forms to income received

Compare gross amounts, fees and payment dates. Do not count the same payout again because a payment processor also reports it. Ask the issuer to correct a wrong form.

    3. 3. Determine the arrangement’s tax treatment

For a typical sole-proprietor independent-contractor business, net payouts generally go on Schedule C with Schedule SE. Employment, entity and other arrangements may differ. The 1099 label alone is not decisive.

    4. 4. Review and document eligible expenses

Deduct only qualifying ordinary and necessary business expenses. Evaluation and reset fees may be current business costs or startup costs depending on when and why they were incurred; not every fee is automatically deductible.

    5. 5. Complete the return and plan payments

Combine the correctly classified income with your other return items, consider federal and state estimated payments, and retain supporting records. A filing extension generally does not extend the time to pay.

    Illustrative reconciliation example

Suppose a contractor has $20,000 in gross payouts and $2,000 in qualifying current-year business expenses. The starting Schedule C profit is $18,000—not the simulated account’s displayed trading profit. Income tax and self-employment tax depend on the rest of the return. These numbers are illustrative, not a prediction of your outcome.
